It wasn’t until I started learning about the nervous system that I realized something else was going on. I wasn’t just introverted. I was overloaded. My body was doing an enormous amount of invisible work every time I walked into a room – and I had no idea.

The problem is that these patterns don’t automatically update when circumstances change. You may be an adult now, with safe relationships and stable environments. But your nervous system is still running the old software – still treating every dinner party like a potential minefield.
This isn’t a character flaw or a personality limitation. It’s a survival adaptation that worked once and hasn’t been updated. Your body isn’t broken – it’s just still protecting you from a threat that no longer exists.
What This Means for You
If nervous system overload is what’s driving your social exhaustion, that’s actually good news. Personality traits are relatively fixed. Physiological patterns can change.
This doesn’t mean you’ll become an extrovert. It doesn’t mean you’ll suddenly love networking events or want to be around people all the time.
