4 exercises for a body that's gone still.

The guide includes a decision guide so you can go straight to the exercise your body needs. Pick whichever one feels like the least effort.

1

Sensory Grounding

5 Minutes

When the senses have gone quiet, small sensations help the body notice where it is. Touch something with texture, widen out to a far-off sound, then come back to slow movement. One simple thing at a time.

2

Gravity Check

6 Minutes

For the floating, far-from-your-body feeling, weight and contact bring you back down. Find what's under you, add a little pressure, hold something with weight, then rest on one point of contact.

3

A Gentle Hold

5 Minutes

For when you feel alone in it and reaching out to others feels out of reach. Warm your hands, rest one on your chest, smooth your hands down your arms, then hold yourself. Comfort you can give your own body.

4

Temperature

5 Minutes

When you're too numb for subtle things to register, a clear change in temperature still gets through. A warm mug, warmth against the skin, or a cool splash of water. One signal the body can feel, even through the numbness.

How to Use the Guide

Designed for the moment you need it.

1

Download it.

Add it to your phone, tablet, or print it. Whichever feels easier to reach for the moment your body needs it.

2

Notice what shutdown looks like for you.

The self-check helps you name the version of shutdown you're in: numbness, brain fog, heavy limbs, emotional flatness, or disconnection.

3

Use the decision guide.

Page 3 tells you which exercise matches what your body is showing you. Pick the one that feels like the least effort right now.

4

Try it, then track what changed.

Even tiny changes matter. The tracking page helps you see which exercises your body responds to, and what tends to come before the shutdown.

This Guide Was Made For You If...

A flat, disconnected, numb feeling, like watching your own life through a window.

  • The emotional flatness, like the volume on everything got turned down
  • Simple decisions that feel impossibly heavy, so they don't get made
  • Going through the motions while nothing registers
  • A body that feels like it belongs to someone else
  • Wanting to care, while the part that cares has gone quiet

What Else Is Inside

Why Your Body Goes Blank

A short explanation of the freeze response and how it works. When the nervous system can't fight and can't run, it shuts everything down. Understanding this changes everything about how you respond.

A "Which One Do I Need?" Decision Guide

Based on what you're experiencing right now: numbness, floating, frozen, or flat. So you can go straight to the right exercise without having to think about it.

A Tracking Page

Log which exercise you used, what was happening before, and what felt different after. Even tiny changes matter. Over time, you'll see which ones your body responds to.

A Self-Check Before You Begin

A checklist for naming what shutdown feels like for you: numbness, brain fog, heavy limbs, emotional flatness, disconnection. Naming it is the first step back.

For the body that's gone quiet and the mind that can't quite catch up.

If any of this sounds familiar:

  • The numb or emotionally flat feeling that doesn't have a clear cause
  • The gentlest possible starting point, smaller than “go for a walk”
  • Something to do in the stillness that does not require feeling ready
  • A guide that does not ask you to explain or fix anything first
  • Motivation and willpower haven't worked, because this isn't something you can think your way out of
  • Wanting something gentle enough to meet you in the stillness

These exercises use the gentlest possible inputs: texture, temperature, gravity, tiny movements. Just enough for the nervous system to get the signal that it's safe to feel again.

Questions

How is this different from the "I Can't Relax" Toolkit?

The toolkit is for when your nervous system is stuck on high alert: tension, restlessness, racing mind. This guide is for the opposite: when your system has dropped below that into numbness and disconnection. Different state, different exercises.

What if I don't have the energy to do anything?

These exercises were designed for exactly that. They start with the smallest possible action: touching a texture, pressing your feet into the floor, warming your hands. You don't need energy. You just need to start with one thing.

How long do the exercises take?

Around 5 to 6 minutes each, broken into short one and two minute steps. Pick the one that matches what you're feeling right now and follow the steps. The decision guide on page 3 helps you choose quickly.

Is this a physical or digital guide?

Digital. It comes as an instant PDF download. You get both a printable version and an interactive version with clickable checkboxes. No logins, no apps.

Is this a replacement for therapy?

No. This is a body-based tool you can use alongside therapy, between sessions, or on days when shutdown hits and you need something immediate. If you're experiencing prolonged numbness or dissociation, working with a professional is always recommended.

More than one kind of hard day?

The Shutdown Mode Recovery Guide is one of three recovery guides, each made for a different state your nervous system goes into.

  • The Shutdown Mode Recovery Guide  ·  for the days the body goes numb and quiet
  • The "I Can't Relax" Toolkit  ·  for when your body is wired and will not slow down
  • The Social Hangover  ·  for the days time around people wears you out

Start with the smallest one. Tonight counts even if all you do is press your feet into the floor.
