5 Somatic & Polyvagal YouTube Channels for Nervous System Regulation

Five YouTube channels for learning how your nervous system works, from practitioners who teach somatic and polyvagal-informed approaches. Each one comes with a beginner-friendly starter video you can watch right here.

These channels are grounded in nervous system education and taught by people with real training behind them. None of them promise quick fixes. What they do well is explain why your body responds the way it does, and give you body-based tools you can try at your own pace.

A note on the research

Polyvagal theory comes up on every one of these channels, so it helps to know where the science stands. The theory is widely used by therapists and somatic practitioners because it gives people a clear map of their body's states. At the same time, some of its specific neuroscience claims are debated by researchers, and the evidence for vagus nerve exercises is still early and mixed. The practices in these videos can be useful for slowing down and reconnecting with your body whichever way that debate resolves. Treat the framework as a helpful map rather than finished science, and keep what works for you.

1. Irene Lyon: Nervous System Education

Irene Lyon, MSC, teaches nervous system education to people in more than 90 countries. She trained extensively in the work of Dr. Moshé Feldenkrais, Peter Levine (the founder of Somatic Experiencing), and Kathy Kain (the founder of Somatic Practice), and her channel translates dense neuroscience into plain, practical teaching. If you want to understand the "why" behind nervous system work before you start practicing, this is the deepest well on this list.

Starter video: "The ABCs & 123s of Nervous System Regulation"

A foundational walkthrough of what nervous system regulation involves and the daily practices that support it.

2. Therapy in a Nutshell (Emma McAdam)

Emma McAdam is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who condenses therapy skills and psychological research into short, practical videos. Her channel covers polyvagal theory, the three states of the nervous system, and body-based approaches to anxiety and trauma, always with concrete steps you can use the same day. Of everyone on this list, she is the most careful about connecting her teaching to the underlying research.

Starter video: "The 3 States of Anxiety in the Nervous System"

A clear explanation of the ventral vagal, sympathetic, and dorsal vagal states as polyvagal theory describes them, and how to recognize which one you are in.

3. Sukie Baxter: Somatic Movement for Anxiety

Sukie Baxter has over 15 years of clinical experience in posture and movement work, with training across mindful movement, integrative bodywork, and trauma-informed approaches. Her work has been featured in Forbes, and her most popular video has been watched more than 2.7 million times. Her channel is the most movement-forward on this list: short, physical practices you follow along with rather than concepts you listen to.

Starter video: "Vagus Nerve Exercises to Rewire Your Brain From Anxiety"

Three follow-along exercises inspired by polyvagal theory, for slowing an anxious body through movement and posture.

4. The Holistic Psychologist (Dr. Nicole LePera)

Dr. Nicole LePera is a clinical psychologist trained at Cornell University who grew frustrated with the limits of talk therapy alone and built an approach that includes the body and nervous system. She is a #1 New York Times bestselling author and the founder of the SelfHealers movement, with a following in the millions. Her channel covers nervous system dysregulation, the window of tolerance, trauma responses, and daily practices for working with all of it.

Starter video: "How to Take Care of Your Nervous System"

A practical introduction to what daily nervous system care involves and where to begin.

5. Somatic Experiencing International (Dr. Peter Levine)

The official channel of Somatic Experiencing International, founded by Dr. Peter A. Levine, who developed the SE® method over more than 40 years of studying stress and trauma. Dr. Levine holds a Ph.D. in medical biophysics from UC Berkeley and wrote the bestselling book "Waking the Tiger." The channel features Dr. Levine himself alongside names like Stephen Porges (who developed polyvagal theory) and Dick Schwartz (who developed IFS). SE describes trauma as survival energy that never finished discharging from the body, and its method works in small, gradual steps rather than big cathartic ones.

Starter video: "SE 101: How Peter Came to Create Somatic Experiencing"

Dr. Levine tells the story behind his method, including the famous "slinky" demonstration of how survival energy builds in the body and how SE works with it gradually.

Key terms you'll hear on these channels

Polyvagal theory. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, this framework describes three states of the autonomic nervous system: ventral vagal (safe and social), sympathetic (fight or flight), and dorsal vagal (shutdown or freeze). It is widely used in somatic work, and parts of it remain debated among researchers.

Vagus nerve. The longest nerve of the autonomic nervous system, connecting the brain to the heart, lungs, and gut. It plays a central role in the parasympathetic "rest and digest" response.

Window of tolerance. The zone of arousal where you can cope with stress, connect with people, and function well. Nervous system work aims to widen this window over time.

Titration. Working with difficult material in small, manageable doses, with rest in between, so the body can integrate without becoming overwhelmed.

Key points to remember

Understanding comes first: before any tool can work well, it helps to know why your body responds the way it does, and education is what these channels do best. Somatic work is body-first, reaching through sensation and movement rather than words alone. Go at your own pace, since this work is built on small doses followed by rest. And regulation is a practice, not a destination: the goal is not to feel calm all the time, but to build your capacity to move through activation and come back.

Where this fits in a bigger picture

These channels are resources, not replacements for professional support. They can help you understand what is happening in your body, give you language for your experience, and offer practices to try on your own. If you are working with significant trauma, chronic dysregulation, or symptoms that feel unmanageable, working with a trained practitioner is often the right next step.

If guided EFT support is more your speed, the companion list covers that lane: 5 EFT Tapping YouTube Channels for Nervous System Regulation. And if you want to understand more about what overwhelm does in the body, start with What Helps When Your Nervous System Won't Calm Down.
